UAW Leaders Hold Meetings with Automakers Amid Ongoing Strike
Detroit – UAW leaders have been in discussions with Stellantis, the parent company of popular automotive brands including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Fiat. These discussions took place during the ongoing strike against the Detroit Three. As the strike continues, UAW President Shawn Fain has also been engaged in talks with General Motors (GM) leadership.
While negotiations with Ford have been active, there are still some key issues that need to be resolved. Due to this, Fain is expected to provide an update on the negotiations and potentially name additional strike targets on Friday. Currently, a total of 18,300 UAW members across 41 facilities in 21 states are on strike, adding to the growing tension among workers who are uncertain if they will be called to strike.
Amidst this uncertainty, some workers express their eagerness to get a contract agreed upon, but they are also ready to strike if needed. The situation is causing anxiety among workers, not knowing what the future holds, and some even feeling guilty as they continue to collect pay for working while others are living off strike pay.
In addition to the ongoing strike against the Detroit Three, there is a possibility that Mack Trucks workers in Pennsylvania, Florida, and Maryland could also join the strike. Their contract is set to expire on Sunday, and negotiations with the company have been described as “painfully slow” by UAW President Shawn Fain. The company, however, disagrees with Fain’s characterization and expects progress in the coming days.
This ongoing strike poses the most risk for GM, as they face potential disruptions in their production and operations. On the other hand, Toyota is in a position to benefit from the strike, as competitors’ production slows down.
