Pro-Kremlin Party Surprises in Slovakia’s Election
Slovakia’s recent parliamentary election has seen the pro-Kremlin SMER party, led by Robert Fico, secure more votes than expected. Fico’s party garnered 22.9% of the vote, surpassing previous opinion polls and indicating a strong showing for the party. In contrast, the pro-Ukrainian Progressive Slovakia (PS) party won 17.9% of the vote.
One of Fico’s key objectives is to kickstart peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. However, his proposals may involve ceding territory to Russia, a move that has raised concerns among many. The coalition negotiations that will follow the election could involve multiple parties and potentially become lengthy.
Fico has pledged to end Slovakia’s military support for Ukraine and block Ukraine’s ambitions to join NATO. These promises have drawn criticism from the PS leader, who believes the election result is bad news for the country. The PS leader has vowed to do everything possible to prevent Fico from governing.
In contrast, the leader of the Hlas party is pleased with the outcome and aims to lead Slovakia out of previous crises. However, a government led by Fico could have serious consequences for the region, potentially changing Slovakia’s stance on Russia and Ukraine.
Fico’s close alliance with Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also raised speculation about potential collaboration against the European Union. The PS party advocates for a different future for Slovakia, including strong support for Ukraine and ties with the West.
Fico previously served as Slovakia’s prime minister but resigned amidst mass protests over corruption allegations. As the election took place, concerns over disinformation and Russian propaganda were prominent. Polls suggest that many Slovaks share Fico’s pro-Russia sentiments, exhibiting a lower belief in Russia’s responsibility for the war in Ukraine compared to other Central and Eastern European countries.
The election results have set the stage for potentially significant shifts in Slovakia’s foreign policy and political alliances. With coalition negotiations ahead, the country’s future direction remains uncertain.
