Mary Robinson, former United Nations high commissioner for human rights and chair of The Elders group, has issued a strong call for the United States to reconsider its military aid to Israel. Speaking to CNN, Robinson criticized Israel’s response to the recent attacks in Gaza, describing it as “disproportionate” and “intolerable.”
The Elders, an organization founded by Nelson Mandela, consists mainly of former world leaders who work towards peace, justice, human rights, and a sustainable planet. Robinson appealed to countries, especially the United States, that provide military aid to Israel to urgently reassess their assistance and impose conditions for future support.
According to recent reports, the United States has supplied $3.8 billion in military aid to Israel since 2016. Robinson pointed out that it is crucial to recognize the innocent Palestinian civilians who are losing their lives in the conflict, as they are not Hamas terrorists.
Robinson firmly called on the United States to exercise restraint and openly express its disapproval of its military arsenal being used in Gaza. She emphasized the need for the United States to take action in order to avoid being associated with excessive violence and killings.
As the international community continues to monitor the situation in the region, Robinson’s plea for the United States to reconsider its military aid to Israel sheds light on the urgent need for the situation to be addressed. With her extensive experience in human rights and her position within The Elders group, Robinson’s call carries significant weight and adds to the growing demand for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
