Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned former President Donald Trump for his recent comments on Israel, labeling them as “sick,” “hateful,” and containing antisemitic tropes. During an interview on a podcast, Trump accused Schumer and the Democrat Party of harboring hatred towards Israel and criticized Schumer’s stance on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Schumer specifically called out Trump for perpetuating the dangerous antisemitic trope of dual loyalty and using Israel as a political wedge. While Senate Republican leaders largely refrained from criticizing Trump’s remarks, GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska spoke out against them, describing them as “incredibly wrong and awful.”
In response to the controversy, some House Republicans attempted to distance themselves from Trump’s comments, while others, such as GOP Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, defended his record on Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also weighed in, denouncing Schumer’s comments as “totally inappropriate.” Netanyahu is set to address Senate Republicans during their closed-door conference lunch via video.
Despite the backlash, Trump stood by his remarks, further deepening the divide within the political landscape. The involvement of religious faith in political discussions was also highlighted, with some Republicans expressing concerns about bringing this aspect into the conversation.
