Two bodies have been recovered from the Patapsco River in Baltimore following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The victims have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26.
In addition to the two fatalities, six construction workers remain missing after the bridge collapse. The incident was caused when the Dali container cargo ship collided with a bridge support, leading to its collapse.
Rescue efforts were hindered by frigid water and the amount of time that had passed since the accident, prompting the Coast Guard to switch to a recovery effort. Officials are unsure when the bridge or port will be able to reopen, sparking fears of trade disruption and impacting the approximately 8,000 area residents who rely on the bridge for transportation.
The accident also raises concerns about the $2 million in daily wages generated by the port, as well as the potential economic repercussions for the area. The community is mourning the loss of the two individuals and hoping for the safe return of the missing construction workers. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story on Swerd Media.
