Google has announced its plans to introduce Gemini, a new large language model, to its upcoming Pixel 8 smartphones. The tech giant is also set to release a Gemini Nano version that will run locally on personal devices.
The rollout of Gemini to the Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 has been successful, showcasing Google’s commitment to innovation. The Pixel 8 is equipped with the Tensor G3 chip for AI performance, setting it apart from its predecessors.
Gemini is expected to be included in the next Pixel Feature Drop as a developer preview. Google is eager to receive feedback on its performance, particularly on lower-specced phones. Initially, there were concerns that the Pixel 8 wouldn’t be able to handle Gemini due to hardware limitations, but these seem to have been resolved.
One of the main differences between the Pixel 8 and Pro models is the RAM allotment, which will impact the overall performance of the device. The Recorder app and Gboard’s Smart Reply feature are set to be expanded with Gemini, offering users a more intuitive and responsive experience.
The Recorder app will now include a Gemini-powered summarize feature that doesn’t require a network connection, making it more convenient for users on the go. Gboard’s Smart Reply toolset is also expected to suggest responses and expand to more messaging apps, enhancing the overall user experience.
It remains unclear if the on-device Magic Compose feature will be available on the standard Pixel 8 model. Google’s move to integrate Gemini into its upcoming smartphones demonstrates its commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and providing users with cutting-edge features.
