Man and Woman Arrested in Connection with Death of 1-Year-Old at Bronx Day Care Center
Bronx, NY – A shocking incident at a day care center in the Bronx has led to the arrest of a man and a woman on murder charges. The suspects, Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41, and Grei Mendez, 36, now face multiple counts of manslaughter, assault, criminal possession of a controlled substance, narcotic drug, and endangering the welfare of a child. The charges stem from the suspected exposure of four children, including a 1-year-old who tragically lost his life, to opioids.
The identity of the deceased child has been revealed as Nicholas Dominici. The New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner is currently investigating the cause and manner of Nicholas’ death. The incident came to light when authorities received a distressing 911 call on Friday. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Nicholas unconscious and unresponsive. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Two other children, a 2-year-old boy and an 8-month-old girl, were also found unconscious at the day care center and were rushed to the hospital. The boy is currently in critical condition, whereas the girl is stable. Another child, a 2-year-old boy, was taken to the hospital by his mother and is also in stable condition.
During a search warrant at the day care center, the police made a significant discovery. They found a “kilo press,” a commonly used tool by drug dealers for packaging large quantities of drugs. The exact relationship between the suspects and the day care center remains unknown at this time, and it is unclear whether they have legal representation.
Mayor Eric Adams has called this incident a wake-up call regarding the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. He emphasized that even minimal contact with these substances can have deadly consequences. A study published in the journal Pediatrics revealed that opioids were the most common substance contributing to poisoning deaths among children ages 5 and younger.
Narcan, the opioid overdose antidote, was administered at the day care center to save the lives of the affected children. This incident highlights the importance of wider access to Narcan, which is now available over-the-counter. It is hoped that this move will aid in the ongoing battle against the opioid epidemic.
To assist individuals struggling with substance abuse issues and their family members, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has set up a helpline. This helpline serves as a valuable resource for those seeking assistance and guidance.
The day care center involved in this tragic incident was licensed and had passed its most recent inspection on September 9. No violations were found at that time, raising concerns about the safety and security of children in similar facilities.
As the investigation into this heartbreaking incident continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for vigilance and preventive measures to protect innocent lives from the dangers posed by opioids.
