Conservative MP Urges More Action to Support Victims of Romance Scams
In a recent statement, Conservative MP Simon Fell has called for increased measures to assist victims of romance scams, describing their experiences as “really traumatic.” This comes as the UK’s National Fraud Intelligence Bureau revealed that it received over 8,000 reports of romance fraud in 2022.
Romance fraud occurs when unsuspecting individuals are deceived into sending money to criminals who pretend to be engaged in genuine relationships. The issue becomes particularly prevalent during the festive period, as people tend to be more vulnerable and seek companionship online.
MP Fell has highlighted the need for better coordination and consistency among police forces in responding to fraud. This includes offering more resources to tackle romance fraud and ensuring that victims are treated with compassion and understanding.
One victim of romance scam, Cecilie Fjellhøy, has shared her personal experience and called for more support for victims. Fjellhøy expressed dissatisfaction with the way she was treated by the police, accusing them of not recognizing her as a victim. She also criticized social media companies like Tinder, claiming they are not doing enough to combat fraud.
Addressing the issue, MP Fell emphasized the crucial role of tech companies in collaborating with law enforcement to tackle this growing problem. Several tech giants, including Facebook, Instagram, and Match Group, have signed a voluntary agreement with the government to reduce fraud on their platforms. This agreement highlights the commitment of these companies to actively combat romance scams and protect their users.
Wayne Stevens from Victim Support also called for more resources to be allocated to tackle romance fraud effectively. This would ensure that victims receive the support they need and that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
The issue of romance scams has garnered attention from both sides of the political spectrum, with Labour MP Dame Diana Johnson and Conservative MP Tim Loughton stressing the need for more support for victims. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of taking action to prevent perpetrators from operating with impunity.
As romance scams continue to exploit vulnerable individuals, the collective effort of lawmakers, law enforcement agencies, and tech companies is crucial. By strengthening support systems, increasing resources, and fostering collaboration, we can work towards safeguarding potential victims and holding perpetrators accountable.
