Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and China’s Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission Wang Yi held a meeting in Moscow on September 18, 2023. The discussions focused on the bilateral relations between the two nations, particularly in the context of the perceived “anti-Russian and anti-Chinese” stance adopted by the United States.
During the meeting, Lavrov and Wang acknowledged the closeness of their positions in opposition to Washington’s foreign policies. They agreed that any efforts to address the Ukraine crisis must involve Russia, asserting the country’s importance in resolving the conflict. This sentiment follows Wang’s previous talks with White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan in Malta, in which the Chinese and American officials discussed the growing alignment between China and Russia.
The increasing closeness between China and Russia has raised concerns among the U.S. and its allies, particularly in light of Russia’s actions in Ukraine last year. Although the two countries are not formally committed to defending each other militarily, their deepening cooperation is seen as a response to what they perceive as U.S. dominance in global affairs.
In addition to discussing their shared concerns regarding U.S. policies, Wang and Lavrov also focused on the upcoming third Belt and Road Forum in Beijing in October. The forum aims to boost trade and connectivity among participating countries. The diplomats addressed the importance of Russia’s participation in the event, highlighting its potential economic benefits.
Furthermore, the two diplomats touched upon the futility of resolving the Ukraine crisis without Russia’s involvement. They emphasized the need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach that includes all relevant parties.
Following the meeting with Lavrov, Wang is scheduled to hold “strategic security” talks with Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of Russia’s Security Council. Additionally, he will engage in trilateral discussions with Mongolian officials, underscoring the multifaceted nature of China’s diplomatic engagements.
The meeting between Lavrov and Wang serves as a testament to the growing alliance and shared interests between Russia and China. Amidst concerns from the West, the two nations continue to strengthen their ties, prioritizing their mutual strategic goals and expanding their collaboration on various fronts.
