Renowned film and television composer, Danny Elfman, finds himself at the center of a lawsuit for breach of contract after facing allegations of sexual harassment. Grammy-nominated pianist and composer, Nomi Abadi, has come forward with claims against Elfman, which were recently detailed in an investigation by Rolling Stone.
Abadi alleges that Elfman sexually harassed her in 2015 and 2016. However, Elfman vehemently denies these allegations, stating that their relationship was strictly platonic. Rolling Stone obtained a police report filed by Abadi in 2017, in which she claims that Elfman exposed himself and engaged in inappropriate behavior multiple times. Elfman’s representative argues that the police report categorizes the allegations as “indecent exposure,” but denies that Elfman ever participated in such acts.
The Rolling Stone article also mentions additional allegations, including Elfman coercing Abadi into a nude photoshoot, which he denies. Elfman is also accused of presenting Abadi with a glass containing what she believed to be semen. Elfman’s representative claims it was actually a moisturizing cream and that the email in question was intended as a joke.
Elfman’s spokesperson suggests that the lawsuit is a consequence of the #MeToo movement, and that Elfman settled out of fear of damaging his career during the height of the movement. Abadi, who previously signed a non-disclosure agreement and received a settlement of $830,000 from Elfman in 2018, is now suing him for not fulfilling the agreed payments. While Abadi’s complaint does not explicitly mention the cause of the settlement, Rolling Stone reports that it refers to claims of sexual misconduct.
Friends of Abadi have come forward to corroborate her allegations, describing Elfman’s behavior as inappropriate and crossing boundaries. This case has shed light on the issue of harassment in the composing world, an area that has received less attention during the #MeToo movement.
Elfman, well-known for his collaborations with Tim Burton and his contributions to films like “Batman” and “Edward Scissorhands,” has had a successful career as a composer. On the other hand, Abadi is an activist and the founder of the Female Composer Safety League, a movement dedicated to exposing abuse in the music industry.
As the lawsuit unfolds, it remains to be seen how this will impact Elfman’s career and the broader conversation around harassment in the composing world.
