Both the Hubble space telescope, launched in 1990, and the Chandra X-ray observatory, operational since 1999, have played prominent roles in advancing our understanding of space. However, NASA now faces the difficult decision of reducing their budgets due to their longevity and the need to allocate funds to other critical astrophysics missions.
The Hubble telescope alone has incurred approximately $16 billion in costs since its launch, while the Chandra observatory has utilized roughly $913 million since its inception. In its efforts to ensure the success of these future missions, NASA has already experienced budget cuts and delays in other projects, including the Geospace Dynamics Constellation and the VERITAS mission to Venus.
