Television giants DirecTV and Nexstar Media Group have finally resolved their 76-day-long dispute, bringing an end to the blackout of Nexstar’s broadcast station signals on DirecTV. The blackout, which began on July 2, affected a total of 159 Nexstar-owned stations, including major networks such as ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and CW, as well as the NewsNation channel.
This agreement comes as a relief to many football fans who were worried about missing out on NFL games due to the blackout. As part of the truce, Nexstar-owned television stations and NewsNation will have their signals temporarily restored to DirecTV, DirecTV Stream, and U-verse. However, both companies will continue negotiations to reach a permanent agreement.
The blackout was initiated after DirecTV had to remove the Nexstar channels from its services following the expiration of a distribution contract. Such channel blackouts have become increasingly common as TV channel distributors struggle to control costs without burdening customers with price increases.
In fact, this blackout is just the latest in a series of disputes between TV station owners and distributors. Recently, Disney channels were briefly blacked out on Charter Spectrum’s service until the two companies reached an agreement. Disney allowed Charter to drop eight of its cable channels from its lineup.
With programming costs on the rise, TV station owners like Nexstar have been seeking fee increases. This comes as TV ratings have seen a significant decline of nearly 50% over the past decade, posing financial challenges for broadcasters.
In light of these challenges, Disney has received preliminary interest from potential buyers, including Nexstar, for its ABC television network and owned stations. However, no decision has been made regarding the sale.
While the temporary restoration of Nexstar’s signals on DirecTV is good news for viewers, the ongoing negotiations between these major television players highlight the complex dynamics and financial pressures within the industry. As broadcasters and distributors continue to navigate these challenges, loyal viewers remain hopeful for uninterrupted access to their favorite shows and sports events.
