A group of volunteers led by María de Jesús Soria Aguayo embarked on a challenging mission to search for human remains and evidence of a clandestine crematorium on the outskirts of Mexico City. Their efforts were spurred by Ceci Flores, who announced on social media the discovery of bones, burial pits, and ID cards near a charred pit in the area.
However, Mexico City’s chief prosecutor disputed the claims, stating that the bones found were of animal origin. This highlights the struggles faced by Mexican families as they seek the remains of missing loved ones in the midst of cartel violence.
The volunteer groups, mostly composed of mothers of the disappeared, are forced to conduct their own searches due to the lack of government funding and support. Activists have criticized the government’s campaign to “find” missing people, labeling it as ineffective and politically motivated.
Despite hours of searching, the volunteers found little evidence at the site. Nonetheless, they plan to continue their search based on anonymous tips and their own investigations. The ongoing effort shines a light on the challenges faced by those searching for truth and closure in the midst of Mexico’s ongoing crisis of disappearances and violence.
Stay tuned for updates on the volunteers’ search efforts as they persist in their quest for answers and justice.
