Several countries, including members of the European Commission, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, the Republic of Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have announced their intent to open a maritime corridor for humanitarian assistance to Gaza. This joint effort was made possible by Cyprus’ establishment of the Amalthea Initiative.
The nations involved in this initiative will be working with UN Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, to coordinate the flow of aid under UN Security Council Resolution 2720. The UAE’s support will result in the initial shipment of food by sea to Gaza, while Cyprus will convene officials to accelerate the maritime channel, supplementing land and air routes from Egypt and Jordan.
The United States will take the lead in establishing an emergency mission to set up a temporary pier in Gaza for aid delivery, working closely with humanitarian partners and Israel. Aid delivery by sea will be a complex operation, with efforts being adjusted to ensure maximum effectiveness.
The ultimate goal of this initiative is to increase the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza through all possible routes, including land deliveries facilitated by Israel. The protection of civilian lives is a top priority, and all parties involved must work together to ensure that aid reaches those who are in need. This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards providing much-needed assistance to the people of Gaza.
