Word count: 346
Israeli aircraft launched an airstrike on a compound hidden beneath a mosque in the occupied West Bank, claiming the facility was being used by militants to organize attacks. According to Palestinian medics, at least one person was killed in the attack.
The airstrike comes amidst a recent surge of violence in the West Bank, which began after a group of Hamas gunmen from Gaza carried out a rampage on October 7. The compound that was targeted belonged to operatives from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, both of whom are responsible for the recent wave of attacks in the area.
The Israeli military released images and a diagram, illustrating the entrance to the bunker and the storage of weapons found within the compound. The military operation targeted the Jenin refugee camp, known as a stronghold for Palestinian militants, which had previously been the focus of major Israeli military operations.
Images shared on social media highlighted the extensive damage caused to the mosque and its surrounding area. The Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance service confirmed at least one fatality and three injuries as a result of the airstrike.
Prior to the incursion, the Israeli military had warned residents of the Jenin refugee camp about the impending operation. However, tensions remain high and clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians have continued since the October 7 rampage. In total, 84 Palestinians in the West Bank have been killed in violent confrontations with Israeli forces during this period.
In a separate incident, a similar airstrike was reported in a refugee camp near Tulkarm, resulting in at least 12 fatalities. The Israeli military has not released any official statement regarding this attack.
The ongoing violence in the West Bank and the Israeli military’s continued efforts to neutralize militant threats underscore the deep-rooted tensions in the region. As the situation remains volatile, concerns about the potential escalation of violence persist, further complicating the prospects for peace in the region.
