President Biden to Announce Emergency Mission to Build Floating Pier for Gaza Aid Delivery
President Biden is preparing to announce an emergency mission to construct a floating pier off the coast of Gaza in an effort to prevent starvation among the residents. The temporary port will be built by U.S. ships and involve hundreds or possibly thousands of troops.
The project, expected to take between 30 to 60 days, will require cooperation with other countries in the region. Israel has been collaborating on the development of the sea port initiative and may assist in the inspection process.
Aid donated by the United Arab Emirates will be sent to Cyprus for inspection before being transported to Gaza via ship. The floating pier will be located slightly north of the Wadi Gaza crossing, near a major checkpoint set up by Israeli forces.
The Army Corps of Engineers will oversee the construction effort, with armed escorts needed to protect the ships as they approach the Gaza coast. The new facility is anticipated to provide an additional route for humanitarian aid into Gaza, supplementing existing land crossings and airdrops.
While the maritime corridor is viewed as a potential solution to the hunger crisis in Gaza, U.N. relief officials emphasize the continued importance of establishing more overland routes for trucks to deliver aid effectively. The initiative marks a significant step towards addressing the urgent humanitarian needs of the residents in Gaza.
